The NCSD trail network adds to the vast recreational opportunities available to those living and visiting the Truckee-Tahoe region. In multi-agency collaborations with with Placer County, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Truckee Donner Land Trust, and Northstar California Resorts (Vail), Northstar CSD has planned, constructed and now provides maintenance for over 20 miles of multi-use trails, spanning the entire district. The Tompkins Memorial Trail (TMT) navigates through the lower portion of the Northstar community, providing connectivity to Porcupine Hill and the western segments of the Martis Creek Trail. In the Porcupine Hill area, the TMT converges with the Martis Valley Trail (MVT) and boasts a paved path through the valley ending at Schaffer's Mill Road. There the path joins the Town of Truckee trail network to further connect with the Legacy Trail; a portion of the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail that connects the region with the Truckee River communities of Glenshire, Verdi, Floriston, Northwest Reno and even further on to Pyramid Lake where the Truckee River terminates.
The Tompkins Memorial and Martis Valley trails are open to the public year-round.
Visitors are invited to hike, run and bike at their leisure!
With the completion of Segment 3A, a paved portion of the Martis Valley Trail, in August of 2022; NCSD focuses on the groundbreaking on Segment 3F during the Summer of 2025. This portion will connect the Northstar Village and the round-about on Northstar Drive, where the MVT ends and recreationists are directed onto Northstar Drive to follow an unmaintained footpath or the shoulder of the road. The final segment, 3E-4, of the Martis Valley Trail is a 4 mile expansion that will steadily climb toward the Martis Valley-Tahoe Basin ridgeline, there it will connect with the Fiberboard Freeway, and the Tahoe Rim Trail, with future hopes of merging with a proposed trail from the North Shore communities of the Lake Tahoe Basin. The CEQA process has been completed with a certified EIR.
